This dish is extra creamy and cheesy! If you love mouthwatering comfort food, this scalloped potatoes recipe with cheese is the recipe for you.
For some reason, this dish always reminds me of church potlucks, holidays, or something else of the sort. I remember always filing through the serving line surveying the many delectable possibilities and being overjoyed every time I saw any dish that included a mixture of potatoes and cheese. This scalloped potatoes recipe with cheese is one of those cheesy potato recipes that I’m talking about.
This recipe uses sliced potatoes, a creamy garlic and onion sauce, and sharp cheddar cheese. Now, I know scalloped potatoes technically aren’t supposed to have cheese in them (they go by a different name if they do), but nobody is worried about technicalities here. These cheesy scalloped potatoes are good no matter what they’re called.
So if you’re looking for cheesy comfort food, perhaps to take to a potluck 😀, you should give these scalloped potatoes with heavy cream a try. Maybe you’ll even make someone like me standing in that line a little happier.
This post is all about how to make this scalloped potatoes recipe with cheese.
Ingredients for this Scalloped Potatoes Recipe with Cheese
- Potatoes- I used Yukon Gold potatoes in this recipe. I just prefer them because of their flavor. There’s nothing wrong with using Russett potatoes though.
- Butter- The butter is used to help make a roux for the garlic and onion sauce.
- Onion- This helps to add a lot of flavor to the sauce.
- Garlic- Minced garlic works wonders in this recipe.
- Rosemary- Chopping some fresh rosemary brings a nice herbal touch to the potatoes.
- Flour- This helps to thicken the sauce.
- Heavy cream- I love how creamy this makes the potatoes.
- Parmesan- Because why wouldn’t I want to add more cheese to a recipe?
- Cheddar cheese- I would definitely go with sharp or extra sharp cheddar for this recipe.
- Green onions- I just like the extra pop of color this gives the potatoes.
How to Make This Scalloped Potatoes Recipe with Cheese
Step 1
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Over medium heat, melt the butter in a saucepan and add in the diced onion. Stir it around until it’s softened. Add in the garlic and rosemary and stir them around until they’re fragrant. Next, whisk the flour into the butter mixture one tablespoon at a time. It will create a thick paste. Start whisking in the heavy cream a little at a time. When all the cream is added, it will look like a smooth sauce. Turn off the heat. Stir in the parmesan cheese and season with salt and pepper to taste.
Step 2
Lay two layers of potato slices in the bottom of your casserole dish. Fan them out so that they’re overlapping each other a bit. Add half of the sauce on top of this first layer. Then, sprinkle half of the cheddar cheese on top of the sauce, followed by half of the green onions. Add another two layers of potatoes over this. Repeat the layering process by pouring the rest of the sauce on top, followed by the rest of the cheese, then the rest of the green onions.
Step 3
Cover the casserole dish with aluminum foil and put it in the oven for an hour. After that, the potatoes should have softened. Take the foil off and let the dish bake uncovered for about 15 minutes so that it has a chance to brown a bit. Remove the cheesy scalloped potatoes from the oven and let them sit for about 5 minutes before digging in.
